Personalization is one of homeowners’ top priorities in the bath, and this is particularly evident in bath faucet selections. As part of a sanctuary from the stresses of the day, bath fixtures need to be able to reflect the personalities and lifestyles of the homeowners. The popularity of custom sinks has also pushed manufacturers to create fixtures that offer flexibility of installation.

Tones, forms and finishes of faucets often nod to nature, offering a biophilic touch. The tactile experience of the user is also taken into account, with textures such as fluting and knurling seeing continued popularity.

Some additional trends in bath faucets:

  • Matte black has been joined in its recent popularity by less traditional finishes such as brushed gold, as well as pops of color aided by PVD technology.
  • Vintage-inspired fixtures offer a nod to the past, drawing influences from movements such as Art Deco and the exposed plumbing of centuries past.
  • Customization is in the hands of homeowners with faucets that offer removable and modular accessories.
  • Handles offer an opportunity for unique design accents, including colorful porcelain or stone inlays.
  • Sustainability is increasingly at the forefront of homeowners’ minds, and fixtures that deliver water savings hold appeal.

More than simply the look and feel of their kitchen and bath products, homeowners are concerned with their sustainability and environmental impact. These concerns extend beyond the manufacturing processes, as well – clients want to know that both their water delivery systems and their appliances are operating at peak efficiency, as much for their wallets as for their carbon footprints. Consumers also want to know that these products are contributing to (or at least not detrimental to) their wellness; they’re seeking the peace of mind that comes of knowing that VOC off-gassing and other potentially harmful effects have been mitigated through conscientious manufacturing practices.
Some sustainability trends in the kitchen and bath:

  • Surfacing containing recycled content ranging from glass to cement to manufacturing or quarrying waste can be found in a vast array of aesthetic finishes.
  • In light of recent concerns regarding health risks associated with fabricating engineered stone, low or no silica content surfacing is increasingly becoming available.
  • Recycled plastics and other post-consumer waste can be found in solid surface, sinks and more.
  • Water savings is a chief concern for faucets, showerheads and more, sometimes aided by smart technology and monitoring.

In the years following the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health of their living environment has remained at the forefront of homeowners’ minds. They have come to understand that total wellness encompasses more than just diet, exercise and frequent hand-washing – health begins at a particulate level, and this is particularly true when it comes to air quality. Far from being the afterthought it once was, lighting is now a make-it-or-break-it element of kitchen and bath design. The importance of lighting extends beyond simple overhead or task lighting – now, illumination is often considered in layers, creating utility and aesthetics that really bring a design to life. Decorative pendants and chandeliers ranging from fashionably minimalistic to elaborate and whimsical can serve as focal points, while the color and temperature of lighting can be controlled to incredibly specific degrees thanks to smart features to create moods and looks beyond what physical design features alone can convey.

Among the current trends in lighting:

  • In the bath, lighting has become an integral part of people’s daily routines with mirror illumination and mood-setting ambient lighting.
  • Biophilic design extends to lighting, with people increasingly seeking to harmonize with human biorhythms and bring nature-inspired flair to pendants.
  • Unique and hand-crafted items are highly prized to deliver a curated, perfectly imperfect aesthetic.

When it comes to bath sinks, form and function are both given top billing – since most people begin and end their day in the bathroom, sinks must make life easier and more beautiful. Increasingly, personalization is key to achieving both ends, as homeowners are gravitating toward bolder choices in the bath that speak to their personal style while catering to their unique needs.

No longer are designers’ clients exclusively seeking resale value in the designs of their primary baths, half baths and powder rooms. Patterned wallpapers and unique vanity designs have all come out to play, and sinks must be able to keep up.

In addition to these aspects, busy homeowners crave simplicity when it comes to cleaning, as well as other practical considerations such as sustainability and hygiene. Simple silhouettes to facilitate cleaning and sustainably produced basins can all be found in today’s bathrooms.

Some additional trends:

  • Nostalgic and “retro” features such as midcentury or Art Deco-inspired designs and colors are seeing a rise in interest.
  • Vessel and wall-mounted sinks are joining undermount sinks in popularity.
  •  Composite materials and ceramics in vibrant colors are showing increased popularity among sink basins.

If the kitchen is the “heart” of the home, then water is the blood. From prep to service to cleanup, very few kitchen tasks can happen without the involvement of water. It follows, then, that kitchen sinks can be thought of as the atria, and as such are the sites of a great deal of thoughtful industry innovation.

The ways every homeowner and their family use the kitchen sink in day-to-day life are as varied as their personalities, and wisely, many manufacturers have made customization and the individual user experience high priorities. There is high demand for a workstation experience with integrated faucets and accessories that can be personalized to make all kitchen tasks more efficient.

In addition to user experience, user style is also paramount. While the classics remain steadfast in their popularity – neutral-toned fireclay comes to mind – post-COVID consumers place high value on creating a space that reflects them and their individual flair, which has opened the door for surprising colors and finishes.

Following is a selection of other trends in kitchen sinks:

  • Color has moved beyond stainless and white into bolder options, including fireclay in colors such as green and blue, as well as hammered copper, brass and other metal finishes.
  • Vintage finishes are also being resurrected, with biscuit tones seeing a resurgence.
  • Undermount fireclay sinks are trending, especially those with triple-ledge designs that can accommodate cutting boards and other functional accessories.
  • Size does matter, consumers say – many want a sink basin as big as they can reasonably fit into their space.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many unexpected results, the refocus on the home is among the most prominent. Spending so much time at home has sparked a resurgence in remodeling and “changing things up” that rivals the busiest of times.

The bath is a room that has garnered a great deal of attention from weary homeowners, who are craving an at-home oasis that rivals the finest spas. Similar colors, materials and finishes are being favored by people who are looking to remodel the bath, so that a favorite respite can be recreated at home.

Personalization, too, is key to the changes being seen in the bath. Having spent so much time at home, residents are craving spaces that reflect their own personal style. Thankfully, bath faucet manufacturers are answering the call for personalization in the bath.

Among the hottest trends in bath faucets right now are:

• While geometric shapes are still popular, they often sport softer, more sleek and smooth lines, with curves all the rage.

• With a nod toward wellness, hands-free and motion sensor faucets have made it into the bathroom, keeping germs at bay.

• Warm tones, especially muted golds, are in high demand.

• Options abound with regard to faucet handles and spout styles, allowing homeowners to customize their choices.

• Coordinating and matching finishes and styles has returned, and not just in the bath but throughout the home.

• Matte finishes, especially matte black, are in high demand right now, with black sometimes outselling the ever-popular chrome staple.

Adding a pop of color to the kitchen is trending in a major way, as is adding ultimate function via appliances, cabinet inserts and even water stations. Faucets that can be controlled by voice or movement are becoming staples, and sinks that offer multi-functionality are in increasing demand.

Today’s kitchen sinks come in a range of colorful options to make a statement or enhance the overall design. They also function as the workhorses of the space, often accommodating a range of accessories to make food prep and entertaining a breeze.

Current sink designs deliver a range of looks, from sleek stainless undermounts to adorned and curved apron fronts. Metallic finishes are also statement makers, whether fused onto acrylic designs or handcrafted from copper and brass.

Some of the key trends in kitchen sinks:

• Workstations continue to gain momentum, with the latest styles including cutting boards that fit neatly in the sink to create additional countertop space when needed.

• Shades of black as well as white are rivaling stainless steel for position, in both matte and glossy finishes.

• Bolder colors such as navy blue, red, green and yellow are also gaining ground, providing a pop of color to white and gray design schemes.

• Accessories are becoming important add ons, going beyond the colander and cutting board to include strainers, drying racks and a host of other options.

• The range of sizes and configurations continues to expand, with compact sizes being designed for small kitchens and as secondary sinks, and extra-large and deep sinks providing ease of use for cleaning large pots and prep work.

• Metals besides stainless steel, such as brass and copper, are delivering distinctive looks, with hammered and living finishes – as well as rich and sparkling tones – making bold statements.

A host of new life stressors have spurred an increased need to escape, to find a place where the body and spirit can recharge. When looking at the home, that desire for a private space to unwind has resulted in master bath designs that deliver a spa-like feel, with amenities that relax the muscles and de-clutter the mind.

During the first decade-plus of this century, many homeowners looking to create that retreat-like atmosphere in their baths were removing standard and jetted tubs and converting that space into massive showers with multiple body sprays and steam functions. However, recent years have seen a reversal of sorts, with many homeowners longing for a good, hot soak to melt their troubles away.

This renewed interest in the tub as a luxurious amenity has led to the resurgence of these fixtures in the master bath especially, but today’s tubs bear only a mild resemblance to their utilitarian predecessors. The current crop of soaking tubs are made of metals, acrylics and solid surface materials, meaning their designs can make them a distinctive, bold focal point of any room.

Among the key trends in soaking tubs right now are:

• Solid surface and acrylic materials used to make some soaking tubs can be molded into almost any shape, allowing for distinctive and custom designs to fit any space.

• Current materials – such as solid surface, metal and concrete mixtures – hold heat longer, resulting in a longer-lasting hot soak.

• Adding pops of color now extends to the tub, with a range of styles and materials delivering a two-tone look with white interior and richly-colored exterior.

• Many soaking tubs are being fashioned with an extended ledge for additional storage or deck-mount faucets.

• Metal soaking tubs are garnering a lot of interest with a special focus on copper, which can be sealed to maintain its look or patina over time.

• Some soakers are available with a flat back, allowing them to be placed against a wall, making them ideal for installation in alcoves where standard tubs once stood.

In the past decade, the shower has gone through a significant transformation, morphing from a place to simply cleanse the body to a space to rejuvenate the mind and spirit as well. Bathrooms have become the oasis of the home, and the tub and shower areas are the focal point, delivering a place to escape and unwind.

With the focus on wellness, especially after such a stressful and unpredictable year, manufacturers have answered the call for shower products that deliver a multi-sensory experience. Even the water delivery systems are being reinvented, with air-infused droplets that offer everything from rainsoft mists to muscle-massaging pulses.

KBDN looks at some of the latest shower trends:

• Chromatherapy has been elevated with the advances in LED lighting, with shower systems now delivering multiple light colors to invigorate or calm the senses.

• Aromatherapy has returned in a significant way, with scent infusion possible via the showerhead, enveloping the user in fragrant warmth.

• The importance of music and sound has been heightened in the shower, with speaker systems being integrated within the showerhead.

• Digital controls and smart systems provide hands-free operation and customized experiences for multiple users.

• Showerheads have the ability to go from soft spray to full stream with the push of a button.

• Hand showers, body sprays and other water accessories heighten the multi-sensory shower experience.
