PALM BEACH, FL — This Florida oasis was created as the dream home for a couple who split their time between Palm Beach and New York City. As a place where the couple could relax and enjoy being outdoors year-round, one request was for a classic, streamlined kitchen that would lend itself to entertaining. The homeowners wanted both a place where a treasured collection of serving ware could be displayed, and enough storage space to tuck away small appliances and other necessities.
Robert Dobbs, CMKBD, who has worked with the couple on two previous kitchens, set about transforming this space into a modern architectural kitchen that also reflected a sense of history. The design blends traditional elements including cathedral ceilings, wood planks and Georgian-style windows with clean-lined cabinetry from SieMatic.
“While the clients originally wanted literally the same kitchen as their home in New York, this house required something a bit less formal.”

Streamlined cabinets and modern amenities complement the traditional Georgian-style windows;
small appliances are neatly tucked away in tall cabinets.
At the center of the space and acting as a focal point is an expansive island that features a wood grain finished in a rich Smoked Oak.
“The island shines as a furniture piece because I used end panels that bring the grain of the oak continuously around all four sides under a handle-less channel. The island literally looks like it’s created from a single piece of wood,” he comments.

The SieMatic cabinetry in three different finishes provides optimal functionality;
the expansive island features continuous grain Smoked Oak on four sides;
the kitchen opens to the family room, allowing for informal entertaining.
The Lotus White Velvet Matte Anti-Fingerprint Lacquer perimeter cabinets help to accent the richness of the wood. A bank of tall cabinets on either side of the kitchen’s large window provide storage for smaller appliances.
Dobbs selected tall cabinets in Polished Nickel Gloss Glass with a Mirrored Finish to house the clients’ collection of platters and serving accoutrements. The cabinet’s interior features a Smoked Oak veneer interior to match the island.

The kitchen’s cathedral ceilings allow for double-stacked cabinets for plenty of storage, and flank another statement piece: an oversized, 4′-tall mirrored stainless steel range hood. “The custom hood infuses a sense of Beaux Arts style into the sophisticated-yet-casual kitchen design,” Dobbs remarks.
The hood required an equally impressive range, notes the designer, and since the homeowners employ a full-time chef, performance was a major factor. The semi-pro 60″ Wolf range has six burners in addition to a griddle and is flanked by SieMatic’s Nickel Matte Gloss faceted drawers. A 72″ Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer is also featured, as is a 36″ Sub-Zero unit in the pantry.
