This bathroom started out as a Jack and Jill connecting the primary bedroom and a nursery on the second level of the home. The cramped layout, lack of storage and outdated plumbing failed to meet this growing family’s functional needs. The new layout eliminated the nursery door, making the bathroom a true primary ensuite. Both bedrooms had deep closets, so the nursery closet was eliminated as well as some of the primary closet to add depth and create more bathroom space.
A double vanity went where the nursery door had been and more shower space was added thanks to the space where both bedrooms’ closets were previously. The double vanity was an innovative schematic solution to the biggest design challenge: the shower entrance would have been too tight if the standard vanity depth had been carried all the way across. Instead, a custom vanity with a clipped, curved countertop was added with color-matched open shelving underneath to provide additional towel storage and an electrical outlet. This solution freed up counter space and provided room for a half wall/full entry shower.
The walnut vanity mimics the tones found throughout the rest of the home while the wainscoting in the space mimics the style. Additional details such as the thick Victorian-inspired crown molding, the whimsical Milton & King wallpaper on the ceiling and vintage-inspired light fixtures helped this bath achieve an authentically historic look.
