Shades of Blue
Goli Karimi
Home Front Build, Los Angeles, CA
The owner of this Windsor Square, CA home was looking toward the next phase in her life, which included her son returning to the family home, along with his wife and children. Her son and his family would occupy the first and second floors, while the third floor – a spacious, though outdated attic space with rec room, bedroom and bath – would be built out into a junior accessory dwelling unit.
To gain a bit more floor area for a comfortably sized new bedroom, a rear service stair – running from the home’s first-floor kitchen all the way to the attic – was completely removed. With the bedroom in place, the hallway connecting it to the bathroom was configured to serve two purposes: storage, by way of a bank of full-height custom built-ins, and vertical circulation, with the installation of a new elevator, keeping aging-in-place in mind.
The bathroom design itself features a blue and white color scheme that is reminiscent of the Greek isles. Tiles in a range of patterns complement the palette and include Fleurs MOD mosaic tiles in white and cobalt, Mestizaje wall tiles in gloss white, Deco wall tiles by Etoile in blue and blue Bejmnat #15 trim tiles. Custom built by Spanish Galleon, the vanity showcases a rich blue repeated on the doors and trim. Fixtures include a tiled-in tub from HydroSystems, porcelain vessel sink from Lacava and Toto Vespin II toilet. Faucets and accessories in gleaming chrome are from California Faucets, Jaclo and Sigma Faucet, while the sconces and mirrored medicine cabinet are by Glass Crafters.
