Japandi Retreat
Lana Nguyen
Design by the Jonathans, New Haven, CT
The owners of this Woodbridge, CT home wanted to transform their non-functional 1980s primary bathroom into a sanctuary with a focus on inviting nature into the space. For Nguyen, the biggest challenge was the layout and how to deal with the slanted tall ceiling. Removing the wall that separated the existing bathroom from a narrow walk-in closet resulted in a highly functional and calm retreat.
The designer wanted to create a space that was moody and high in contrast, with modern details and natural materials. A large window provides a view of the lush greenery outside, and the Homary 70″ Gray contemporary oval freestanding stone resin soaking tub in front of it makes for a soothing soak. The walls perpendicular to the tub are clad in oak veneer slats, adding a touch of nature and interest. On one wall, the Mercer vanity from James Martin Vanities is topped with a floating quartz MSI Calacatta Miraggio Gold countertop with Scarabeo rectangular sinks. One small All Modern Frankie Single Light Metal Dimmable Pendant helps balance the space yet keeps it symmetrical.
Across from the tub, a two-person shower is carved into the room, creating its own niche. The walls are covered in Porcelanosa 23″x59″ large-format wall tile, while the floor is level pebble natural stone, both showcasing a charcoal tone that provides a contrasting, moody feel. Outside the shower is a Woodbridge Smart Bidet Tankless Toilet.
The shower ceiling and bathroom floor are finished in 24″x24″ Gazzini Move black tile, which provides additional contrast with the wood slat walls and natural light. All faucets are from the Grohe Eurocube Allure Brilliant line.
