Contemporary Rustic

Part of a whole-home remodel, this kitchen was completely transformed to improve functionality while giving it a more contemporary take on a rustic style that fit the exterior architecture of the Sonoran Desert home at the foot of Pinnacle Peak mountain. Klosterman worked with Laura Marlier of Laurel Designs in Scottsdale, AZ, on the project.
Removing the peninsula and soffit, which concealed weight-bearing beams that were replaced with new beams, repositioning HVAC ductwork, and creating new ceiling transitions in a multi-angled sloped ceiling opened up the kitchen to the adjacent bar/lounge area. Additionally, shifting appliance and plumbing locations, including moving the Kohler sink and Brizo faucet to the island topped with Arizona Tile’s Oxide polished quartz, allowed for more workspace, including on the perimeter where countertops are fabricated from Neolith’s Calacatta sintered stone slabs.
Removing the sink window made space for a focal-point Steel & Stone exhaust hood and Miele dual-fuel range. The custom hood enclosure, locally sourced, is made of cold-rolled steel, giving it an aged yet modern look. While removing the window caused some hand-wringing for the designers, the loss of the view and natural light was made up for by installing full-height glass panels around the adjacent breakfast room, creating the feel of an Arizona sunroom.
The black metal hood and custom Quail Hill Interiors’ cabinets as well as the wire-brushed and distressed black fumed wood on the island contrast the rift-cut and stained white oak cabinets, accented with Top Knobs’ hardware, and panels for the Thermador appliances, including a refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. Antique cloud mirror behind the wire mesh adds dimension and interest.
