Warm Minimalism
MARK CAYEN AND KEVIN MULLEN
Empire Kitchen & Bath, Calgary, Alberta
This ensuite was designed as a serene, modern mountain spa, grounded in warm natural tones. Flat-cut walnut melamine was used for all Empire Kitchen & Bath custom cabinetry, offering movement and tone reminiscent of the kitchen’s real walnut millwork while supporting a cohesive material narrative throughout the home. A floating double vanity with open shelf storage created an airy visual while maintaining functionality. Vertical cabinetry towers flank the vanity, offering symmetry and concealed storage. Touch-activated, backlit mirrors bring a subtle layer of technology and ambient light without disrupting the clean architecture.
One of the defining design moves was the continuation of wood slats across the wall – a gesture that integrates architecture and millwork while enhancing the spa-like atmosphere. The use of large-format natural stone introduces soft texture, reinforcing the space’s warm minimalism.
This ensuite prioritizes sustainability through its materials and execution. LED lighting in the mirrors and pendants provides efficient, long-lasting illumination with minimal energy consumption. Durable materials – such as natural stone flooring and tile – were selected for their longevity and ability to stand the test of time without replacement.
