Scenic Overlook
AMY KLOSTERMAN & MICHELLE JEFFERSON
AB Design Elements, Scottsdale, AZ
The goal for creating the spa-like bathroom in this new build perched on a ridge overlooking a golf course in Fountain Hills, AZ was to bring the feel of the Sonoran desert experience inside. To highlight the varied greens of the Arizona desert and the golf fairway, Amy Klosterman and Michelle Jefferson used an off-black tile from WOW Tile, a custom walnut melamine vanity, Silver Roots marble and the sparkle of glass shower panels and lighting to create a rich and balanced color story. The BainUltra tub is set right on the window for some sunset sips of wine.
One of the challenges faced by the design team was that the clients wanted a wide open water closet with no privacy needed. They chose to partially separate the Kohler toilet area from the master bedroom with a slatted wall since there were views from the bathroom through the master, out to the pool and patio area. They clad the slats with the same Cleaf walnut melamine material that is used on the vanity and transitioned it to flat paneling within the toilet area. Then, they transitioned to black tile, which took on its own patterning as it traveled around the bathroom, so it all integrated harmoniously. Ginger accessories and Kohler fittings balance the space.
The designers also needed to expand the space and did so by floating the vanity off the floor, using floor-to-ceiling clear glass to enclose the shower, using that open toilet concept to elongate the shower area, creating floating shelves for towels and using vanity mirror placement to reflect the views.
